News apps

Download at least one new news app for your smartphone or tablet. Use it for a week and then report back to this blog. What do you like about it? Don't like? How does it affect your news consumption, having it at your fingers? Would you recommend it to others? Why or why not?

  1. I downloaded the Fox News app. I liked how their biggest story was often featured at the top of the page. The layout of the app was also nice. It was easy to navigate. However, I felt like my news coverage was extremely limited. I also found it really odd how I could only find certain stories on Fox and not on any other news site. As concerning as that was, I felt like the app was also one sided. There wasn’t a lot of “liberal” sided news. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it wasn’t heavily biased in every article. It caused me to double check every story that I came across on other news apps more often. I would recommend it to people who don’t get their news from a neutral source or don’t check multiple sites for different perspectives. It definitely allowed me to see a different side of some stories.

  2. For my apps I downloaded ABC News and CNN. Overall I think I noticed myself being more informed of the news that was happening each day. I enjoyed getting the noticifcations of the major stories but if I'm being honest I did not really read much more than just the notifications. I would recommend this to other because right now is a time that has very important news changing at a very fast rate, therefor you can stay up to speed. And if you were like me and don't particularly enjoy reading large quantities of news articles you're given the facts without having to go ahead and read more of the article.

  3. I downloaded the CNN news app for my iPhone about a week and a half ago under the direction of this class assignment. Typically, I would gather my news from the iPhone provided “news” app, which is a singular platform that brings many different news sources into one app, specifically tailored to my interests. I read CNN news but I preferred The Washington Post and New York Times, originally.
When I downloaded the app it asked me if I wanted notifications on and I obliged. This allowed me to be alerted when major stories would come out. During this time many life changing events of minority groups occurred in our country and this allowed me to be on top of the information, more than ever before. It was to the minute coverage versus me checking the news for the day the next morning or before bed. I liked this aspect of the app, being able to know the news exactly when it happened. One of the beneficial aspects of this app is that I was able to connect my parents DirecTV account to the app and I was able to watch the live news. News all around me 24/7 it what it felt like to me. Unfortunately, I feel like I've been more anxious since having the app notifications turned on. Every time something crazy happened in Washington- I got a notification. It’s been keeping me on edge recently. So perhaps, having the news at your fingertips can be beneficial but a vice at the same time. I would recommend the CNN news app to others. It seems to provide a non-biased news coverage, despite its criticisms. Very cool app.

  4. I downloaded the FOX news app. I really enjoy it because it gives you a positive perspective of this presidency. This election is no where near perfect but it gives you positive things the president is doing good things for this nation. I believe they are biased to Trump but they do report the truth. I believe i need to widden my views of different news outlets I can look at also.

  5. Having more than one news source app downloaded on my phone makes keeping up with non-sense that is taking place in the white house a lot easier. CNN and The Washington Post are the two news apps that has been keeping me up to date with what's going on in the world. I do believe that having news apps on the phone makes it a lot easier to know what's going on. I would definitely recommend everyone to download one or at least two news worthy news sources. I like how both news apps not only gave major content to each story but also had tons of pictures that went along with what the article was about. There's not much that I didn't like about this assignment or the two apps. I am more connected and better informed on what's going on around me. Again, I would recommend downloading news apps to be educated about what's going on.

  6. I have a generic news app called "News" on my iPhone. This app allows me to get news from multiple sources. Bloomberg, Time, CBS, CNBC, CNN, etc. I feel that this is a very wide array of sources, but I have not seen such a wide array of stories. Mainly, just a focus on Donald Trump. I have seen very few stories that stray away from Donald Trump. Most of these stories use facts, but there are a few stories that use a more opinions than I would prefer. My news consumption did indeed increase, but simply for the assignment. I see in the future me using this app very sparingly. I would recommend this app to my friends, if they are into the news. But, if they are not, I will simply not bring it up.

  7. For my news app, I downloaded CNN. I chose the CNN app because that is mainly the news that I watch on television, where I feel I get accurate and unbiased news coverage. I loved the app, as it allowed me to see the current affairs taking place in our nation and beyond even when I was running around with a busy schedule. The notifications are probably my favorite because it sums up the big, important parts of the news story if I don't have time to read the full article. I will continue my use of this app because I like to be able to know what is happening in the world around so I can be better informed and educated. I would recommend this app to my friends because it is so simple to have the big news stories of the day at your fingertips.

  8. For my daily news consumption, I chose to go with a news app called USA Today. It is a famous news provider, and I like it because it informs you on breaking news extremely fast and it is very accurate. Any and everything I need to know about significant current events is right here on this app. I recommended this app to my mother the other day because she always watches the news on television.

  9. I downloaded CNN. I liked it because it also had a tab for videos. It was neat how organized it was and that it did not send me a ton of notifications. I did not select certain news articles to see. Instead I just looked at the featured articles. They were able to communicate their news in a way where I could easily understand them. I would recommend this to anyone that is not really organized because this app is not hard to navigate.

  10. I downloaded NY Times and BBC News. Out of the two, I like BBC better than NY Times because it allows you to choose from tons of different genres of news. You can view new by topic or by time. You can also personalize your news feed but BBC also allows you to choose from top stories to most read the economy and technology. NY Times wants you to subscribe to see full or all stories. I get notifications from BBC which keeps me up on top stories which makes it easy to understand the different conversations people have through out my day. I would recommend BBC over NY Times because BBC gives you different options without having to subscribe unlike NY Times which automatically asks for a subscription ONE free week trial or you don't get the whole story and get left confused

  11. I downloaded the ESPN news application after seeing all of my friends had it. I chose this app because sports news is by far the most interesting type of news to me, and I just really enjoy keeping up with sports. I have really enjoyed this application. It isn't like CNN or FOX where you only get partial stories to sway one's opinion in a particular direction, but just raw, pure news. That is why I have enjoyed it so much.

  12. I downloaded CNN news app about a week ago and before then I used the Apple "News" app. I liked the News app since all of the stories were brought to the reader from different sources and reliable sources. However, I really enjoyed having CNN this past week. I actually started reading about what's been going on around the world instead of just little articles of something crazy happening somewhere. I enjoyed the credibility of the sources that CNN provided, they try to rule out bias and present the reader with actual news. I plan to keep the CNN app because you can just open it up whenever and read about what's going on in our world today.

  13. I downloaded the CNN app and I've really liked having it. I'm not that good with technology but it was a very easy app to figure out where everything is. I don't enjoy getting so many notifications on my phone, but I do enjoy being aware of what's going on in the world, at the touch of my fingers. I would recommend this app because I don't find it being bias. I think it's very straight forward.

  14. Downloading the news app has definitely been one of the most beneficial things done to my phone. The CNN application has kept me in touch with what is going on in the world and the other news around me. CNN is not just the US, it shows you the news in other countries also. I recently downloaded a new local app to see if I prefer it better than such news as CNN being extremely broad. Although, if we are being honest, the news app can get extremely annoying. For Example, sitting down and you get a notification and you think someone text you. Not sure why I would think that because I have no friends. I would recommend this app to others because I truly feel that people should know what is going on.

  15. I downloaded the CNN app I really like it. I got it set up to where I receive what I want to see. The only thing I dislike about it is all the notifications it send throughout the day. Other than that I really enjoy being able to know what's going on in the world because at first I really wasn't quite interested in the news.

  16. Before this semester, I would have said that downloading and using a news app on my phone would be a smart idea. It is smart to have the newspapers and other forms of media at our finger tips. However, since the stories aren't giving me the full disclosure on the app, I have to turn to print. I downloaded the New York Times Newspaper app. I am currently in a Beginning reporting class which requires us to read the paper just about every day. After having time going through and reading the paper, it seems easier than using the app. I tried to check up on the app as much as I could, but it was not as helpful as the print media at my fingers. I would recommend this app to people. Nowadays we are so consumed with our phones that in order to get news, we turn to Facebook, Google, or The Onion. If someone had a handy dandy news app that was more accurate than a social site, it would help in the problem of citing sources and so on.

  17. I downloaded the CNN application. Prior to doing this, I would only occasionally watch the news. I would glance at it if it were on a nearby TV or if my parents had it playing on the radio during a car ride. Since downloading the app, I've stayed updated on many things that are going on in the world. I think this is because it was sending me notifications, but also because the more I would glance at the notifications popping up on my screen, the more I wanted to know. I even ended up downloading it to my computer, so that I would also get notifications on there. I really enjoyed having it at my fingertips and I would recommend this to others. It's an easy way to keep up with the news across the world at the touch of a button.

  18. I used the BBC news app for the week and I enjoyed the experience. The app is a world. Was app so it's more than just U.S. news which is refreshing. Also, since it's not U.S. Focused it's much less biased. A downside I have is the dashboard of the app is always really busy and hard to focus down on one thing, which can be annoying. It has made me keep up with the news however, and I would reckoned it to anyone who wants unbiased news sources.
