Welcome to Media and Society Spring 2017 — and your first assignment

I look forward to getting to know you all in Media and Society this spring. I'm looking forward to exploring the role of media in society and the interaction of media with society with you. My most important goals for you are to improve your media literacy so that you can evaluate real news and identify fake news and to ignite your passion about whatever form of media most interests you.

To get us started, please comment with a bit of your background, your major, why you're in this class, which medium or media most intrigues you — and why.

This assignment will be worth your first 10 points and is due by 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23.

  1. I am Bronwyn Story and my hometown is Greers Ferry, Arkansas. I am a Broadcast Journalism major and I want to pursue a career as a sportscaster. I am taking Media and Society because as a Journalism major and future journalist, I need to be able to understand and convey legitimate information to the public. My favorite media is television because to have both visual and audio from a live event is powerful to the viewer, instead of having to choose one or the other.

  6. Hi, my name is Alyssa Baughman. I was born and raised in sunny southern California, but moved here to Conway after I married an Arkansas boy I met when he was stationed in Camp Pendleton. I am a Communication major with a Minor in Psychology. With this I plan to get my certification in elementary education. I chose this class because the effects media has on our society today is something that really interests me. People of all ages are affected by one thing or another that is broadcasted through most media outlets. The media medium that I enjoy most is Social Media. As a 21 year old girl that's where I can connect to others with like interests, stay up to date in news (real and fake), as well as being able to keep in touch with my peers.

  8. Hi, I'm Risa Ozeki. I am from Nagoya, Japan, not Tokyo! After I graduate from high school 4 years ago, I came to the states to study in university. I spent 1 year to study English and 2 years of college in a small unknown university in Kentucky. Then I decided to transfer to UCA last year. Currently, I'm junior and majoring in Marketing. Recently, I am considering whether I should minor in Spanish or not after I took the course for 2 years. I would like to see myself after graduating from UCA working in the U.S. focus on gaining experience to be more successful as a great marketer in a real business world. I am aiming to work for either fashion industry or beauty industry. That's what I am interested in and where I did my fist internship last summer in Tokyo, Japan.
I took this class because I believe that the media plays a big role in a business world these days and it will be very beneficial for me to study about it. I use social media the most. I acknowledge there are negative things when using it too. But it is very accessible, interactive and easy to know what is going on around me. Thank you.

  10. Whats up everyone, my name is Johnathan Logan. I am a junior here at UCA majoring in Sports journalism with a emphasis in Broadcasting minoring in Communication with a emphasis in Public Relations. My reason for coming to UCA was primarily for football but I learned quick that if God doesn't allow it to happen then it wasn't for you or its not the right time. So with that being said I am in full pursue of obtaining my masters degree and going wherever the good Lord leads me.

  12. Hello there! My name is Payton Perkins and I'm from Bentonville, Arkansas. Fun fact, I technically didn't graduate from Bentonville High School. I switched to homeschooling for my senior year. Based on my experience, I can say homeschooling can be really great as long as you avoid procrastinating all your work till the end of the semester.
I'm majoring in Digital Filmmaking and I've yet to declare a minor. I have an idea where I want to go with my life, but it's kind of this big blur in my head. I dream of running my YouTube channel and/or producing movies for a career and living in either Southern California or New York City. (They're completely different, but I'm in love with both.) But, like I said, that's a dream. Truthfully, I'll go wherever God can use me.
I'm taking this class because the influence social media has on our society is very intriguing to me. It's crazy to think how someone with very little knowledge of our world can rattle nations with just the press of a button. I'm excited to learn more about these things this semester!

  14. My name is Durham Hill. I am from North Little Rock, and I graduated from North Little Rock High School. I am a Sophomore, and my major is Music Performance (Horn). I am in this class simply because it was a requirement and I did not want to take an 8 a.m. class. The medium of media that most intrigues me is television. How there is subtle hints on television that speak to us subconsciously, without us ever being aware about it consciously.

  15. Hello, my name is Mary Yang. I was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Arkansas when I was in 4th grade. Last fall I transferred to UCA, from Arkansas Tech University, because I wanted to pursue a major in Communication Science and Disorders. After graduating with the best grades possible, I hope to get accepted into graduate school and work towards becoming a speech therapist. I am in this class because this is the only chance I will get to take a course that strays from my major. I feel that this class will allow me to get away from the everyday lecture style classes that I have always been in. Although I love my major and the classes, I feel that I would like to take something that is a bit more laid back and not about science. I hope through this class I can showcase creativity, and get better at writing presentable papers. The media that I find most intriguing are videos. I mainly find Youtube pretty interesting because I think it is amazing how people can make a career out of it, even though they may have zero background knowledge about how it works.

  16. Hey guys. I’m Megan Linton. I’m a sophomore environmental science major with a minor in journalism. I am very passionate about conservation and hope to travel to South America and Asia to help with conservation projects that have been started by zoos around the country. I got started in conservation when I worked as an intern at the Saint Louis Zoo Herpetarium over the summer. I’m in this class to help me branch out in the career world. I hope that one day I am able to publish journals and articles about the efforts around the world to help save the planet. I love print media. Newspapers in particular. Which is kind of weird for someone who is trying to conserve the planet’s resources. The reason I like newspapers is because not only is there a physical copy that someone can look at, but there’s also a digital copy (usually) of the paper. It’s interesting to see how the two can compare.

  17. Hey! I'm Kati. I'm a freshman and I'm undeclared right now. I'm taking an intro class in education, but I'm still not sure what I want to be yet. I'm in this class because my advisor said she thought I would like it, and I trust her judgment. My favorite kind of media is social media. I like that I can check up on my friends and see how they're doing even if they are far away. Also, I find it amusing when people air their dirty laundry and get super petty on Facebook. It gives me a good laugh!

  19. Hello, my fellow acolytes. My name is Bryttani Bartlett and I am a Philosophy and Political Science double major. I thoroughly enjoy critical thinking, politics, and studying legal systems. I plan on going to law school or applying to a graduate program when I finish my bachelors. I spend most of my extra time reading news and watching documentaries.
I took this class because journalism is something that is intriguing to me and I was looking for a class that I could be interested in and learn from. I felt like this class would also tie in well with my majors. In a period of increasingly biased, skewed and fake news, I think it is essential for me and as a responsible citizen to take a class that will help me better know what the facts are. I also look forward to better understanding media in our society and the influences around it.
I enjoy reading my news and information because I can do it quickly and quietly on my phone or computer- it is easy. But, I prefer to watch the news or informational documentaries to learn more about events and issues. I recently watched Requiem for the American Dream, it was very enlightening and challenged me to think about our nation. On a daily to weekly basis, I watch CNN or MSNBC for news. When reading my news, I prefer Reuters, BBC, CNN, New York Times, or Washington Post.

  20. My name is Jonathan White and I am from Mountain Home, Arkansas. I am currently majoring in Studio Art with a focus on Graphic Design. My end goal for my career is to be a graphic designer for a larger company rather than just freelance. I am in this class because I was interested in how graphics relate to media and I have a media background from high school courses. My favorite form of media is print media because the designers need to know how to make it stand out and get the point across without looking obnoxious.

  21. Cześć (means "Hello" in Polish)
My name is Paulina and I am from Poland. I have a Bachelor degree in IT with Graphic Design and Multimedia and I have made an interactive movie as my thesis project. In this movie the spectator, making decisions while watching it, what influencing the film plot. My film passion is the reason why I decided to study Digital Filmmaking at UCA. I would like to create movies, for example: Experimental Film, Animation or Documentary.

I choose Media and Society classes because I am aware that it is the integral part of filmmaking process. If you want to make films, you have to better understand how media influence the society. Without this knowledge, you can’t create a reliable plot. It is really interesting for me how media may subconsciously manipulate people's behavior and emotions.

My favorite type of media are books and movies. Books for me are definitely the most reliable source of information with usually well-organized content. Movies make me impressed, for example by seeing how many components and forms have to been included to create a coherent story.

I am also interested in gesture and mimicry communication as a kind of media. Paul Ekman, a psychologist, noticed that micro expression is universal regardless of race, sex or language. What is more, the body language is a more trustful type of communication than the verbal one. Politics may say lies to the audience, but their body language frequently uncovers the true intentions. Unfortunately, politicians use a support from specialists, who teach them what kind of body movements they should use to be more persuasive.

I think that all kind of media are interesting and useful, but it's important to be able to distinguish the truth from the false.

  22. My name is Isabella Barnello and I graduated from Cabot, Arkansas spring 2015. I am originally from Alaska and my family moved around because my father was in the military and was stationed somewhere else from time to time. I am majoring in Journalism with a minor in Anthropology. I hope to be a part of photojournalism and/or field archaeology in the future. I'm taking Media and Society because it is a requirement for my Journalism major. I have a few friends who took your class in the past and told me you were a great teacher to enroll in. My favorite types of media are probably photographs, books and films. Photographs make you look at the bigger picture, literally, as well as bring in a large message with a singular photo. Books are full of information to catch the attention of many through colorful language that makes imagination flourish. Movies, like documentaries, bring so much new information on the table. You learn new things from each minute you watch.
